Ever since the Enlightenment in the 18th century, ‘enlightened’ thinkers have prophesied the end of religion.

Modernity would kill God – science would make us sceptical of miracles; technology and psychology would fix all our problems; the changing roles of women would weaken the male dominance of clerics and therefore religion as a whole.

The reality is, religion is burgeoning around the world. As the title of John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge’s book puts it, God is Back.
