You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:14-15(NIV)
Key reflections:
- Jesus invites us to enter into an intimate relationship with him.
- When we accept the invitation, it’s as if we are sitting at the table with our precious friend, listening and sharing in deep fellowship.

Seriously, how good is that!
We get a seat at the table of the king. We’re not topping up the glasses or clearing the plates. We’re right there, eating, drinking, laughing, reclining, adoring. The invitation to this feast among friends was personally delivered by hand–pierced hand and came with a tight, warm embrace.
When we accept that invitation from Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit, we enter communion with the Father and an abiding intimacy that is impossible to fully comprehend. We get to be friends with the creator of the universe. By His grace alone, we get to join Him at the table; we listen, we delight, we obey, we worship, and we love.
I want the friendship and the fear of knowing you.
I’ve had the lyrics from an old Matt Redman song floating around my head lately. It’s called The Friendship and the Fear. I’ll leave you with the chorus:
Knowing You
Hearing You speak
Seeing You move mysteriously

Your whisperings
In my soul’s ear
I want the friendship and the fear
Of knowing You
