Church Event: Relics of Saints – Varroville

Louis & Zelie Martin were the first married couple to be canonised by the Church. Find out what is it about the marriage of this 19th-century French couple that the Church is holding up to as an example for 21st-century families.

Their daughter, St Therese of Lisieux (St Therese of the Child Jesus) is much more famous, having been canonised in 1925, only 28 years after her death. She was made a Doctor of the Church in 1997.

We will be holding a Welcome and Mass from 11 am on Saturday 25, plus at other times. All are most welcome to attend. More detailed information is available on the parish website.

Theology Event: Exploring Philippians and Colossians – Doonside

The Apostle Paul wrote a series of delightful letters from prison but, unfortunately, the shorter letters often get swamped in the wake of the letter to the Ephesians. Philippians and Colossians are magnificent explorations of who Christ Jesus is and what it means to be ‘in Him’ as a disciple and a witness to His work of salvation and sanctification. Join us as we consider what God the Father has done and is doing through His Son by the power of His Spirit.

Sharing God’s Love? Medicine And The ‘Social Gospel’ – Croydon

How do we share God’s love in a suffering world? Is there hope amidst suffering? Is there a difference between sharing the good news and doing good works? Dr Andrew Browning has worked as a missionary doctor in some of the poorest areas of the world – especially Africa – in areas of war, famine, ebola, poverty and HIV. He will help us reflect on Christians caring for people: balancing their immediate physical needs without losing the eternal perspective.

Reclaiming Marriage: Risky Renegade Reformers – Croydon

Marriage of church leaders is commonplace today, but for the Reformers it was a renegade decision. They reclaimed marriage after centuries of enforced clerical celibacy. Those who chose to marry faced risk and ridicule; even Martin Luther’s best friend held deep concerns about the wisdom of Luther marrying, and did not attend the wedding. Rachel Ciano, a church history lecturer at SMBC, will explore why the Reformers were reclaiming much more than marriage itself.

Sharing Truth In A Post-Truth World – Croydon

Increasingly, Australia is a culture where the important truths in people’s lives are recognised by what we prefer or feel rather than by how things objectively are. Christians however, follow a Lord who declares he is the Truth & who speaks powerfully inconvenient truths to us that radically challenge our preferences. Richard Shumack, visiting missions & critical thinking lecturer at SMBC, helps us negotiate these shifting cultural sands so we can speak Jesus’ truth with wisdom & confidence.

Meteorology and Theology: Climate Change and the Bible – Croydon

Global warming is a hot topic. Scientific consensus for climate change is strong but skepticism and denial persist, including among Christians. What, if anything, does the Bible say about these things? How should we understand stewardship of the earth (in Genesis) in light of Revelation’s vision of the new heavens and new earth?

Prof Roger Lewis, a physicist at the University of Wollongong and Chair of the Australian College of Theology, will examine the scientific and biblical data.
