The Bible and the Underworld with Peter Bolt: Do we Westerners scoff at ghosts, demons, the occult, evil spirits and the devil? Have these things become just an imaginary part of tantalising modern entertainment, or are they real, and deserve to be taken seriously? Peter is a New Testament scholar who will take us through the Bible to show how Jesus came to expose the spiritual ‘underworld’, to deal with it decisively, and liberate us from it.
(SMBC Hot Topics is a series of 10 talks held on Wednesday evenings. They are ideal for those who want their hearts and minds challenged biblically. Come to one, some or all ten!)

Church Event: Awake to Israel (ATI) – Epping
Topic: Daniel Chapter 2
Speaker: Greg Willis (Timeline Ministries)
It is 604 BC and King Nebuchadnezzar rules the known world. He has a disturbing dream and demands his own wise men reveal to him not only the dream itself but its interpretation – a seemingly impossible task. The king begins to destroy them. Daniel the Jewish prophet in exile asks for time then seeks God’s counsel and wisdom. God honours Daniel’s request.
PS: Did these wise men ever forget what Daniel did for them? 600 years later wise men from the east came into a sleeping Jerusalem asking the question “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”

Church Event: The elusive joy of Christian community – Newtown
We all want our churches to be more than clubs, more than institutions and more than events we turn up to each week. We want to experience the joy of real community with other Christians.
But let’s face it: that joy is elusive. Our churches often feel more like clubs, institutions or events than genuine communities. Why is that? And what can we do about it?
In this Centre for Christian Living event, we’re going to explore what Christian community really is, how it is created and sustained, and what each one of us can do to experience its joys.
