Theology Event: SMBC Hot Topics – Croydon

HOT TOPIC #4 – Speaking the Truth in Love with Kim Hawtrey

What is ‘free speech’? Is it endangered? Ordinary Christians are increasingly paying a price (whether mockery, persecution at work or accusations of arrogant bigotry) for simply articulating Christian views. Kim, an author and speaker based in Sydney, will weigh up our call to faithfully proclaim the word, and the sensitivity required as we relate to outsiders in a world desiring to gag the gospel.

SMBC Hot Topics is a series of 10 talks held on Wednesday evenings at 7pm (sharp)–9pm. They are open to the public and run to 17 May.

Theology Event: How to find your best self – Newtown

At our first Centre for Christian Living event for 2017, David Höhne and Tony Payne will discuss Bonhoeffer’s extraordinary Christ-centred answers to some basic human aspirations and show their relevance to our Christian lives.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is well known for his book “The Cost of Discipleship” and for the manner of his death – executed in the last days of WWII for conspiracy against Hitler.

Amid Bonhoeffer’s work on the nature of community and the ethical life, few subjects were more important than his writing about the ‘self’ – that is, the perennial human question of who we really are & who we long to be.

Church Event: FGB Guest, Suzanne Pillans – Blacktown

UK Evangelist Suzanne Pillans is giving her testimony of new experiences in the mission field.

One of her recent exciting experiences was during the African Ebola epidemic. Apart of travelling overseas, recently her ministry in developing countries was more extended, also speaking through local radio stations and reaching groups from her home by telephone. On one such occasion in a local radio station a local called and asked her to pray for the Ebola victims in the town. As she prayed Jesus healed all those sick there and there were no more infections.

Theology Event: SMBC Hot Topics – Croydon

HOT TOPIC #6 – CONFRONTING PERSECUTION
with Elizabeth Kendall

Across the globe, persecution of Christians and churches abounds, and is growing rapidly. It shouldn’t surprise us: Jesus warned his disciples to expect it. Elizabeth is an international religious liberty analyst and advocate, author, and research fellow at the Melbourne School of Theology’s Arthur Jeffery Centre for the Study of Islam. She will suggest biblical foundations for understanding and responding faithfully to this scourge.

HOT TOPIC #7 – SAME-SEX MARRIAGE? MARRIAGE EQUALITY?
with Michael Stead

Many people sincerely believe that marriage is ripe for redefinition. Is this a question of rights and equality, or something else? Does God’s word speak clearly about marriage? Can it legitimately make sense of the current debate and suggest how to respond wisely? Michael is the Anglican Bishop of South Sydney, and has spoken and written thoughtfully on this contentious issue.

Presence Conference is an experience. It’s effective ministry, leadership training and empowerment for every believer. It is about you meeting with God and God meeting with you.

Theology Event: SMBC Hot Topics – Croydon

HOT TOPIC #10 – WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT THE REFORMATION?
Stuart Coulton

The day before All Saints Day 1517, Martin Luther posted a document on a German church’s wall. That’s a long time ago: 500 years, in fact. Surely it’s time to give the Reformation a break and get on with more modern Christian concerns. How can what took place so long ago better help us understand the authority of the Bible and the centrality of grace? Stuart is Principal at SMBC.
