One of the biggest questions we wrestle with throughout life is who we are and what we’re here for. Our sense of identity shifts as family seasons change, friendships move on, we grow older or face setbacks like losing a job. Educator Dr Eric Moyer suggests a more secure foundation for identity is found in God’s original design.

Key points:

  • Dr Eric Moyer says identity is shaped by core principles and purpose, not just personality or achievements, and begins forming early in life.
  • Modern culture’s push to “be anything you want” can leave people restless and unfulfilled, constantly searching for meaning.
  • Anchoring identity in God’s original design brings peace, confidence and a deeper acceptance of others as uniquely created.

“Identity isn’t just who you are; it’s the set of principles, perspectives, purposes and priorities that we hold at our core that determine everything that we think, feel and do,” Christian thought leader and researcher Dr Eric Moyer told Hope 103.2’s UNDISTRACTED podcast.

In Redeeming Identity, Dr Eric points out that these core elements develop early in life and continue to shape relationships, choices and even how people view God.

A key challenge in modern culture is that people are encouraged to “be who you are” and told they can become “anything they want to be” but this often leaves people in a cycle of trial and error, frustrated by society’s changing ideals and desires.

“You keep trying things on and eventually you find out there’s still something missing,” Dr Eric said.

When identity is anchored in God rather than in shifting cultural currents, Dr Eric noticed the biggest difference people experience is internal peace.

“Whenever you start figuring out that God has a plan for you, God has a design for you, there is a peace in that,” Dr Eric said.

“You can walk with confidence. When we let Him show us who He is, in doing that, He shows us who we were meant to be.

“If you go back to Genesis, we were initially designed to be [God’s] image bearers: people who reflected His identity, who He is.”

When we see ourselves from that perspective, it also changes how we relate to others — as reflections of God’s multifaceted nature.

“We can be more accepting of people,” Dr Eric said.

“Because when we look at them, instead of saying that they have to be like me, [we realise] God created that person in a completely different way, with different gifts, different talents, different experiences, different passions, a different purpose.”
