Listen: Childrens' author and children's development expert Susanne Gervay chats to Katrina Roe

Many children – in fact 1 in 5 – are suffering from vision problems, but they and their parents don’t know it yet. And often it’s seriously impacting their education and social lives.

Susanne Gervay is determined to reach kids with undetected vision issues, and help kids with vision impairment. She’s a children’s author, and an expert in children’s literacy, growth and development, most famous for her series on bullying, I Am Jack.

Now, Susanne has published The Boy in the Big Blue Glasses, about a boy adjusting to the reality of life with glasses. It’s designed to help children be more understanding of those with glasses, and encourage children who are transitioning to wearing glasses themselves.

In this chat with Katrina Roe, Susanne talks about what inspired her to write the book, as well as her passion to reduce bullying and to help kids move from struggling to thriving.

Prevention and Early Detection

In their interview, they also discuss the rise in the numbers of children with short-sightedness.

Susanne’s two big pieces of advice to parents? “Get kids’ eyes tested early”, and “Kids need 15 hours a week in sunlight, outside!”
