No Referral, No Cost: Inside the Program Supporting Australian Parents

Key points:

  • Research from Gidget Foundation Australia found that more than one in three parents say the reality of parenthood did not match their expectations.
  • The free Gidget Village Program offers clinically facilitated peer support to help new parents feel less alone, more prepared and more confident.
  • The program requires no GP referral, making it highly accessible to parents across Australia.

First-time parents across Australia are often unprepared for the emotional weight of early parenthood, with perinatal mental health organisation Gidget Foundation Australia revealing the transition can be far more complex than anticipated.

“Many first-time parents tend to underestimate the emotional intensity, unpredictability and ongoing adjustment of parenting,” Gidget Village Program Manager Lucy Barrett told Hope 103.2.

“There can be expectations that parenting instincts will just come naturally and bonding will happen instantly, but this can really take time.”

Research from Gidget Foundation Australia highlights a significant disconnect between expectation and reality, and the importance of peer support in the early stages of parenting.

“More than one in three parents say the reality of parenting just did not match their expectations,” Lucy said.

“Early parenting is rewarding, but many parents are surprised by [the] ongoing stress and the practical challenges.”

Lucy noted that common assumptions – like the idea that babies will fit neatly into existing routines – can quickly unravel.

“There’s challenges like sleep deprivation and feeding, combined with a lack of sleep for both partners, that can really radically impact what they can manage physically and emotionally,” Lucy said.

With this in mind, the Foundation developed its free Gidget Village Program to support new parents’ transition into parenthood and connect them with other people in the same boat.

“Our data does show that 37% of parents feel reassured simply by having other parents share their experience,” Lucy said.

“Where parents feel supported, and understand that their experience is common, they’re just more resilient.

“[The Gidget Village Program] fundamentally offer parents a safe, supportive space to really talk honestly about the realities of their own experiences.”

Importantly, the Gidget Village Program is free, and doesn’t require a GP referral, so participation is extremely accessible.

“These programs combine clinically facilitated peer support with evidence-based guidance, helping parents feel less alone, more prepared and more confident,” Lucy said.

“[Parents] get practical tools to manage stress in relationships and support navigating challenges like identity change, emotional wellbeing and connection.”
