Audio: Dr Chris Seton in conversation with Stephen O’Doherty

The medical evidence is clear — a lack of sleep places our children and adolescents at risk of problems with learning, mental health disorders, mood swings and uncharacteristic behaviour.

On the other hand, there’s good news — getting sleep in order will have significant beneficial effects, and may even clear up misdiagnosed conditions such as ADHD.

To mark Sleep Awareness Week Open House spoke with Dr Chris Seton, a leading paediatric sleep specialist from the Woolcock Institute, Sleepshack, and Westmead Children’s Hospital.

In an in depth interview, Dr Seton explains the mechanism of sleep, its importance for learning, mood, mental and health and behaviour. We also discuss why boys and girls can react differently to lack of sleep. The interview draws on the best medical evidence about the way always-on technology and the fear of missing out (FOMO) can be harmful.

This is an informative interview that we hope will provide expert, research-based, sensible and important information and assistance to parents.
