Listen: Sam chats with Daisy Turnbull about helping kids develop resilience

Daisy Turnbull is a mum, an author, a teacher, and the director of wellbeing at a school in Sydney, and she’s just released a book called 50 Risks to Take With Your Kids.

On Hope Breakfast, she explained where the idea for this book came:

“In my role as director of wellbeing, I do a lot of research into resilience and all the benefits of it but there’s not always a how-to guide… so I thought it would be great to get the list of things you need your kids to do to be resilient,” Daisy said.

We expect kids when they’re aged 12 to get to and from school on their own, and make their own lunch. But the question Daisy had was, “what are we doing at age 10, and 8, and 6, to get them to that point?”

Daisy explained our role as parents is to model some of the risks with our kids, and also give them the space to take risks themselves.

“It can be very attractive to just want to fix every problem for your kids.”

In  her conversation with Sam Robinson in the above player, Daisy explained why there’s so much fear in parenting, and some practical ideas of risks our children can start taking that will help in the long run to develop resilience.
