Listen: Jayden and Andrew tell Ben McEachen about Servants Community Housing

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a time of big changes for so many of us. For Jayden and Mikyla Battey, they decided to do more for one particularly vulnerable group that were greatly affected by the pandemic.

Confronted by how relatively comfortable their lives were during the gruelling demands of Melbourne’s epic lockdowns, Jayden and Mikyla were shaken by considering what people experiencing homelessness must have been going through.

This newly married and young couple did not really know anyone sleeping rough. But as followers of Jesus, they wanted to find ways to assist such vulnerable people.

The Batteys got in touch with Servants Community Housing. Operating several homes across Melbourne, Servants offers a distinct model of secure housing that involves live-in managers and cultivated community.

After initial concerns, dedicated prayer and consideration, Mikyla and Jayden became live-in managers at a Servants House in suburban Melbourne.

They live alongside 28 other men, including Andrew. He and Jayden spoke with Hope Mornings about what happens in a Servants home, and the difference it has made to both of them.
