The Pope’s visit to Egypt reminds us that 800 years ago another Francis stood in the same landscape also as a peacemaker. During the Fifth Crusade, St Francis of Assisi crossed the no man’s land between the warring sides to meet the leader of the Muslim side. Reverend Dr Patrick McInerney, a Columban Missionary Priest, says Pope Francis encourages us to do likewise and go into the world and meet people from different faiths. It is by coming face-to-face as individuals that we connect on a personal level and understand we have common goals.
