The Lord’s Prayer is the most famous prayer ever.
Given to us by Jesus at the midway point of his Sermon on the Mount (see Luke 6), “the Lord’s Prayer” is the way the Lord himself told us how to pray.
So, what does Jesus’ passed-down prayer have to do with your money?
For this episode of Money: Faith and Finance, co-host Pete Burrows asked Hope Morning‘s Ben McEachen about the intersection between this defining prayer and your household budget.
“I think it’s got a lot to do with money,” Ben said to Pete about the Lord’s Prayer.
Daily bread and reliance
Ben got to think a lot about the vast details of the Lord’s Prayer when he recorded an eight-episode limited series about it.
In conversation with theologian and author David Hohne (The Last Things), The Lord’s Prayer Podcast is a guided tour through the myriad ways this brief prayer impacts us all.

Including what we do with our money.
“The Lord’s Prayer covers everything from the ultimate future – when Jesus comes back – right through to my daily life and what is going on,” Ben said.
One example of the prayer’s connection with your wallet is its well-known request: “Give us today our daily bread.”
“Daily ‘bread’ – daily ‘money’,” Ben joked with Pete.
For the record: the reference to “bread” in the Lord’s Prayer seems not to be an early usage of that slang expression for “money”.
However, this part of the Lord’s Prayer “is particularly anchored in the things we need on a daily basis. It’s not just limited to food, it goes beyond that and includes our finances”.
David Hohne in The Lord’s Prayer Podcast pointed out that the sense of this “daily bread” request, in its original language, was to seek God’s provision for tomorrow and ongoing – today.
“There is a daily reliance on God built into that petition in the Lord’s Prayer, but an acknowledgment that God will keep you into the future,” Ben said.
