Listen: National Parks and Wildlife Service's Lawrence Orel shares advice on how to avoid being swooped by a magpie this 'swooping season'
National Parks and Wildlife Service’s Lawrence Orel speaks to Hope 103.2 about why these iconic Australian birds do this, how you can avoid it happening to you, and whether or not sticking cable ties on top of your helmet, or wearing an ice cream container on your head will actually help scare them away?
“They’re really a great friend to you most of the time,” Lawrence said.
But, he gives a player’s tip that if you can avoid a certain radius around a magpie’s nest, just during breeding periods, then you should also be able to avoid their wrath.
