More than Meals, More than Wheels

Meals on Wheels is celebrating 60 years in Australia. This iconic service is renowned for bring meals to frail aged and adults with disability 365 days per year, yet it is so much more.

Sure, Meals on Wheels distributes quality food to people in need.

Along the way it delivers companionship and a quick check on the well-being of its clients.

It provides significant volunteer opportunities, mostly for recently retired people, but as Open House found, also for young people on work experience.

It also provides meaningful work opportunities for people motivated by something beyond a corporate career.

To celebrate Meals on Wheels Day on 2017, I visited the Blacktown Meals on Wheels centre.

In common with hundred of centres around Australia, Blacktown Meals on Wheels not only delvers to clients in their own homes, it also provides a nutritious meal and great companionship for people who venture in to the centre.
