“You might have reached a certain age but that doesn’t mean you stop growing spiritually.” As a grandparent, the time is right to invest in your own faith.

Key points:

  • As you enter grandparenthood, it’s as important as ever to be investing in your own faith.
  • Find new resources, podcasts, Bible apps and devotionals that will open God’s word to you in new ways.
  • It is never too late to start. As you spend time with God, your words and actions will speak God’s love into the lives of those around you.

On the Grandparenthood Podcast, Hope Mornings’ Ben McEachen talks with Ian Barnett from the National Grandparent Movement about why spending time with God and growing your own faith is a priority.

Ian compares the habits of healthy eating with the routines we need to build a healthy spiritual life.

“You turn 60 and you think, well, I’ve eaten healthy all my life. I can stop now and just eat donuts and lollies.”

“Imagine if you’ve been eating healthy all your life. You turn 60 and you think, well, I’ve eaten healthy all my life… I can stop now and just eat donuts and lollies.

‘Within a month or two, you will not be well, you’ll be sick – and spiritual growth is the same thing.

“You still need to invest in your life.

“Being a grandparent actually might even allow you more time to think through who you are and how God’s working in your life.

“So absolutely every season of life, you need to invest.”

Spiritual challenges in later life

In the same way that we will face physical changes and challenges as we age, there will also be spiritual challenges. Being a grandparent will add a new perspective to how you see the world and the culture the younger generations are living in.

Familiar Bible verses will speak to life in a new way, but they will always be relevant.

Using the resources that are around

As the rhythm of life changes, especially at retirement, habits change, and it can be the right time to find new ways of doing things. Listening to podcasts, using devotionals and Bible apps can all form a new scaffold to support your growing faith.

Even if you’ve never read the Bible for yourself before, this can be the time to start.

“Sometimes we have to stop and really assess how we’re going and think, okay, what’s gonna help me now in this season?”

The world has changed and so have you

Ian worked as a pastor before retirement, but even now he continues to learn and grow through time spent reflecting on the Bible and what it means today.

“We are called to wake up,” he said.

“Sometimes we have to stop and really assess how we’re going and think, okay, what’s gonna help me now in this season? Because I’m just finding things are hard.”.

What will change

As you spend more time with Jesus, those around you will see the difference. Your words, actions and attitudes will start to speak of God’s love, no matter how old you are.

As Ian reflects, your grandchildren will take it all in.

“All these things can say to someone and those around you, wow, this grandparent of mine is still just as passionate, if not more, about their relationship with Jesus.

“And they realize more and more that the world needs the same God that my granddad gave his life to all those years ago.”
