One Hour a Week Can Change Someone's World

Key points:

  • Edwina Baily volunteers her professional skills weekly with Hope’s digital and content team, driven by her faith and belief in the power of radio to build community.
  • Last year alone, 9.5 million Australians volunteered formally or informally, with research showing it strengthens wellbeing, builds social connection and can reduce anxiety.
  • Edwina encourages anyone feeling stretched to start small, even an hour a week or something from home can make a real difference to others.

We all can think of reasons not to give our time, effort and ability. Consider all the reasons you can.

There is quiet power in people showing up, not for the money or applause, but because they know it matters.

Edwina Baily is one of Hope 1032’s incredible volunteers.

So many generous, caring people help Hope’s ministry in many ways, from praying for others to answering phone calls during our annual appeals.

Every week, communications specialist Edwina donates her skills and time to assist Hope’s digital and content team.

“I really believe in the power of radio to connect with people and to bring community together, and to help people find their own purpose as well,” Edwina told Hope Mornings.

“I’m more than happy to give my time to be part of this incredible ministry.”

Edwina’s perspective reflects a wider reality.

Research shows volunteering strengthens wellbeing, builds social connection and can even reduce anxiety.

At its best, volunteering doesn’t just help others.

It also shapes the person offering it.

“By being in a community, you can find your purpose, and connect with others, in a way that you don’t connect just by going out for dinner with people.”

For Edwina, her volunteering journey started young.

“It felt like it was a call from God to be living my life this way.”

“Volunteering’s been part of my life for a very long time; I think since I was about 16,” Edwina said.

“It felt like it was a call from God to be living my life this way, and that it absolutely is stepping out in trust to believe that God will provide.

“Very much, my faith undergirded that.”

Beyond her weekly service at Hope, Edwina also works with Crossroads Prison Ministry.

Volunteers also play a vital role through Crossroads in befriending and investing in those behind bars.

“We have about 600 volunteer mentors around Australia,” Edwina said.

“Incredible people who mentor people who are in prison as they study the Bible.

“They just are passionate about helping those who are feeling very isolated and alone in prison, as they journey towards understanding who they are created to be.”

For many of us, volunteering can feel like one more thing in an already full life.

Edwina understands that reality and, instead of pressure, offers a gentle invitation.

“Obviously everyone’s life is different, and some people are carrying a very big load in their own lives,” she said.

“But you can start by just doing something very small. It’s not giving every hour of every day to a cause.”

“It can be once a week, giving an hour.

“It can be doing something from home… they don’t even need to step out their own door to be part of volunteering and helping other people.”
