After struggling to understand Australian slang at church, Chuhao Liu created Sunflower AI to help people hear the gospel in their own heart language.
Key Points:
- Chuhao Liu created Sunflower AI after struggling to fully understand church services in Australia.
- The tool offers live translation in speech and writing across more than 80 languages.
- He believes churches can use technology to help people hear the gospel in their own heart language.
Chuhao Liu had a big problem that impacted his spiritual growth.
To fix it, he came up with a solution that can benefit others.
“I came to Australia [two years ago] and I attended church services and other events,” Chuhao told Hope Mornings.
“I found that it is not that easy to understand, especially the Australian slang.”
Chuhao moved from China to Wollongong, to study a PhD in Civil Engineering.

Wrestling with the frustration of not being fluent in another language, Chuhao wondered: “What if I could listen or read in my own language?”
He put his PhD on pause and embarked upon finding an AI-powered answer to the language barrier – even though he had no background in artificial intelligence.
“Australia is a multilingual population and churches want people to hear the gospel in their own heart language.”
“I don’t specifically think about how God thinks about technology,” Chuhao said.
“But I sometimes feel a guidance from God; feels like my destiny that I was put here to do this because I have the plan.
“I have the big motivation.
“Maybe, how God thinks about technology is a way to reach the nations, like it is described in the Book of Revelation.”
Providing live language tools at your local church can be a “warm” and “welcoming” gesture, according to Chuhao.
“Australia is a multilingual population and churches want people to hear the gospel in their own heart language.”
“[Church] is a great place to use the AI to connect people from different cultural backgrounds.”
