Dami Im caught up with Hope Breakfast to share her love of cacti, and her recent experience cooking and eating one (spoiler: it didn’t taste good).
Longtime friend of Hope Breakfast, Dami Im, has returned with a new single Lonely Cactus, filled with a solid bass groove and Dami’s sweet vocals. But what is it all about? Is Dami saying that 2020 has made her a little isolated, and perhaps even prickly?

“Initially I wrote it as I’m a lonely cactus, ” Dami told Hope Breakfast.
“I was in lockdown with [husband] Noah, and I wanted to socialise again and find connection. But when things opened up and I was going to catch up with friends, I couldn’t be bothered. I wanted to be by myself. I love being by myself, and I had gotten so used to that.
“And eventually we changed the lyrics to ‘you’re a lonely cactus’ because it was just easier to write about someone else. And I could think of three or four people in my life who are just like that.”
With the release of a song themed around the spiky succulent, Dami saw an opportunity to create a unique cooking video.
“I found out that you can eat cacti, and I decided to give it a try, and it didn’t end too well,” she said.
“I saw on YouTube, people cutting a piece of cactus in the desert, putting it on the fire and eating it.
“I decided to get one, put olive oil on it and seasoning, and put it in the oven. I ended up gagging. It was slimy and a bit sour, and smelled like beans and weird herbal medicine. It wasn’t pleasant.”
