‘Hey God, Can I Ask You Something’ is a fantastic resource aimed at primary school aged children.
Key points
- While the questions are deep, Brad R. Emery does a fantastic job of breaking it down into bite-sized chunks of information that are simple and easy to understand.
- I would really encourage parents to utilise this tool.
- I give Hey God, Can I Ask You Something? 5 stars out of 5!
The book covers some of the deeper questions about God that quite frankly, even some of the adults I know struggle with, including “Dear God, if you love us, why do bad and sad things still happen?” – I mean, who hasn’t asked this one?
“Wiggly and colourful” (Miss 5)
“It looks like the burning bush that Moses talked to” (Miss 7)
While the questions are deep, they are broken down into bite-sized chunks of information that are simple and easy to understand.
These were my children’s initial responses to the cover of this book, and they only became more impressed with each page we turned!

The “Did You Know” facts are lots of fun as well!
I did find myself having to paraphrase even further for Miss 5, and some of the words needed explaining, however as I read the question of their choosing for that day, I found that we were often pulled into deeper conversations, with my children bringing their own questions and insights to the table!
I would really encourage parents to utilise this tool.
The child-friendly language and sweet illustrations led to meaningful (and sometimes profound) engagement, and I would really encourage parents to utilise this tool.
Hey God, Can I Ask You Something? allows you to keep the session as short as you like, while also lending itself to deeper more philosophical trains of thought, so it’s versatile as well as engaging – perfect for short attention spans!
After we had read through a few questions together, I asked my children what they thought of the book:
I give Hey God, Can I Ask You Something? 5 stars out of 5!
“I love how it talks about God so much!” (Miss 5)
“It’s like God is talking to us” (Miss 7)
We will definitely be sharing this book with our friends!
