In 1987, a group of English dairy farmers with a mutual love for Africa, had an outlandish idea.

“Let’s put some of our cows on a plane,” they thought, “and send them to needy African families. And let’s send pregnant cows so when they give birth, there’ll be another animal to give away to a neighbour.”

Some people ridiculed the idea – but it worked. Now, 22 years later, Send-A-Cow is a major charity, working in nine African countries, and lifting thousands of African families out of poverty every year.

David Bragg was one of those daring farmers who hatched the original plan in 1987.
