Listen: Marriage Week founder Dennis Outred in conversation with Stephen O’Doherty

Marriage Week is an annual opportunity to strengthen and celebrate marriage. It recognises that great marriages need to be worked at and nurtured, and that both pre-marriage and in-marriage education are important and valuable.

Marriage Week was initiated by husband and wife team Dennis and Anne Outred, who were instrumental in bringing the Alpha Marriage Course to Australia.

Marriage Week is aimed at nurturing the Biblical or conventional definition of marriage, particularly focussing on the significance of “the qualities of the relationships between mothers and fathers”.

Marriage Week Australia states that “marriage should be encouraged, strengthened, valued and supported by society and individuals in every possible way as a social good”. The organisation promotes September 16 as the Great Aussie Date Night: an encouragement for married couples to “rekindle” their romance.

To get the first Marriage Week off the ground the organisers were assisted by Hope 1032, which has outlined its support for traditional marriage in this position statement.

Dennis Outred spoke with Open House about Marriage Week, and also reflected on the timing of the 2017 celebration, which coincided with the national postal survey on the definition of marriage.
