It’s Closing Time For Worship Band Garage Hymnal

After nine years, Garage Hymnal is pulling down the roller-door and shutting up shop – for now.

They won’t say they’re breaking up, because “bands don’t do that these days”, but they are taking an “indefinite hiatus”. In their final interview with Hope breakfast announcer Dan Widdowson, Garage Hymnal was issued a musical challenge – to create a song in 3 minutes, based around the topic “Long Weekend”. Their impressive, impromptu verse and chorus was set to the tune of their hit song, Child’s Play.

Dan and Hazey then pulled off an impressive followup performance in their own swing-jazz style… Their duet starts at about 1:35 in the above video.

How It All Started For Garage Hymnal

Garage Hymnal, a collective of musicians who love to worship God by invoking the lyrics of hymns from yesteryear, was birthed in the mid 2000’s. It was at the 2004 Sydney University Evangelical Union’s annual conference where the band’s founding members first played together, as the conference worship band. They quickly realised they had an opportunity to meet a great need for evangelical worship leaders in Sydney, and so they gathered other like-minded musicians from a mix of churches and denominations and formed what is today known as Garage Hymnal.

Their debut album in 2006 was Take My Life.  Now, 10,000 album-sales later, with five records and an EP under their belt, the core band has decided it’s time to call it a day, due to life getting busy for each of the band’s members. Singer Alanna Rodgers is getting married and heading to the UK, while the other musicians are each going their separate ways to focus on family, jobs and individual creative projects.

As well as the high-roatation single Child’s Play, Garage Hymnal is well known for songs Father’s World and The Light Has Found Us, as well as All That I Am which was included in US Worship Leader Magazine’s 2013 compilation.
