Set in the near future, Her is about a man’s relationship with his artificially intelligent operating system.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, with Scarlett Johansson playing the voice of the operating system, Her is about a man who accidently falls in love with his computer.  Given our lives are so dominated by intimacy with our devices, Her isn’t as ludicrous as it sounds.

That’s the verdict from film reviewer, Ben McEachen, who says the movie speaks volumes about our modern love affair with technology.

“It gets into this crazy but fascinating territory of what makes a relationship, what makes a person.  Who can you love?” Ben says.  “Look at how gripped we are by technology today, how much we love our social networking.  At the same time, it doesn’t take much to see that our real live communication and our real relationships actually suffer by how much we are involved with technology.  Her hits at some of those issues.  It might even inspire some people to turn off their computers, turn off their devices and actually turn to one of their loved ones and have a real, live conversation.”

Her also speaks into the incredible loneliness and pain many people feel today, reflecting our desire for intimacy.

“A movie like Her drills down deep into how thirsty all of us are to relate correctly and it shows it in a way that’s really whacky, but scarily believable,” Ben says.  “I hope people take it on board, think about it and then try to relate better to real-life people, as opposed to their gadgets.”

Her opened in cinemas on January 16.
