Faith, doubt and spiritual warfare take centre stage as filmmakers set out to portray the unseen world through a Christian lens.

Key Points:

  • New Australian Christian thriller in development: The Devil’s Fear is currently in pre-production and fundraising, led by filmmakers Tsu Shan Chambers and Robert Carne.
  • Story explores faith and the supernatural: The film follows a newly baptised man and his atheist girlfriend as she encounters the reality of the spiritual realm.
  • Hope-focused message: Creators say the film aims to inspire audiences and present a hopeful Christian perspective on spiritual warfare and belief.

Some of us have a strong belief in the supernatural, while others question the existence of a powerful unseen world. A new Australian thriller is hoping to harness that spiritual curiosity and spark conversations about faith, doubt and the influence of good and evil.

Australian filmmakers Tsu Shan Chambers (My Eyes, Remnant) and Robert Carne (Hope to Die) are in the pre-production and fundraising phase of The Devil’s Fear, a film they hope will enlighten audiences to the Christian experience of the supernatural.

The film centers on Sam, who gets baptised over Easter, and his atheistic girlfriend, who joins him on a church weekend away where she’s confronted with the reality of the spiritual realm.

“Two sides are battling and she doesn’t even believe either exists.”

“She’s really not ready for it,” writer and director Robert Carne told Hope 103.2.

“Two sides are battling and she doesn’t even believe either exists.”

The intention of The Devil’s Fear is to bring supernatural concepts to the screen in a way that reflects their modern-day application, in contrast to horror films that use them as an anchor for the twisted nature of their story.

“In [The Devil’s Fear] a group of young Christians full of God, filled with the Spirit, utilise their spiritual gifts in order to wage spiritual warfare to save the soul of an atheist,” Robert said.

“We get to see all the gifts of the spirit in action: donning the armour of God, tongues, prophecy – everything in there in order to bring someone into the fold.

“We’re presenting a Pentecostal worldview [but it’s] accessible across denominations.”

The Devil’s Fear is a story about victory from a Christian point of view.” Tsu Shan said.

Producer Tsu Shan was drawn to the hopeful nature of the project, and the light it provides in a culture weighed down emotionally and spiritually.

“There are a lot of challenges and dark things happening around the whole world,” Tsu Shan said.

“[The Devil’s Fear] is a story about victory from a Christian point of view,” Tsu Shan said.

“It’s got a very hopeful storyline [and] wants to inspire and engage young people in our community about their faith.”

Robert agrees that in a time where there is such a need for a sense of hope, Christians have to show how a belief in God provides an answer to people’s pain.

“People are searching,” Robert said.

“Now is the right time for Christian’s get amongst it and stand together.”
