The love that will not let us go

Read Romans 5:8

Yet the proof of God’s amazing love is this: that it was while we were sinners that Christ died for us. (JBP)

We human beings who find it so hard to love unconditionally find it so very hard to grasp the unconditional love God has for us. We tend to love the loveable,to love and insist on love in return,to love what others do for us. God’s love goes beyond this.

The greatest evidence of this is the fact that his supreme act of love was put into practice when we were of no use to him,and didn’t want much to do with him. Loving those who turn their backs on you is true love,painful love. The sort of love God delights in.

Of course to benefit from this love,to experience this love,we need to turn to him and embrace him. His love does us no good unless we respond to it just as a gift does not become our own until we accept it.

But we need to daily remember that God will not love us more if we try extra hard to please him. God will not stop loving us if we yet again make a mess of things. We may not enjoy his love as we ought,but the love keeps coming. Trying to be worthy of that love is self-defeating. Better to gratefully accept it and live a thankful and trusting life. Better to believe that the heart of our life is not our love for God but his love for us.
