This past week was the week of Australia’s worst national disaster. It was also the week that marked the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth. Darwin’s theory of evolution has influenced not just sciences like biology and geology, but psychology, ethics, education, the arts and even theology – our understanding of God and the way he works.
From a Christian standpoint, of course, the debate rages over whether the earth is young and made in six 24-hour days (as a literalistic reading of the book of Genesis might suggest) or whether it’s millions of years old and God used evolution as a tool to create it.
We look at how Darwin’s ideas have shaped contemporary life, faith and culture – sometimes even to our detriment.
