Read Hebrews 10:19-22
19 And so,dear brothers and sisters,we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death,Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house,22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. (NLT)
You may have had the experience of opening up a new bank account or subscribing to some online service. In order to safeguard your security, you needed to provide some information to identify yourself. You may have had to compose secret questions which only you might answer. You would have been asked to provide a user name and/or unique pin number. And you would be warned not to write this down. Which for most of us would be an intolerable burden on our already overloaded memory.
Inevitably, you forget your identity number and thus have to take special steps to access what is rightfully yours in any case. Just as well getting through to our God is not as complicated as this. We can approach him in confidence any time and are assured of access. And as this passage points out, this is possible because Jesus opened the door to God’s presence.
Our shortcomings mean the door to God is slammed shut. Jesus,by dying for us,has opened the door. God has welcomed and accepted him. Once we ourselves accept what he has done for us,we too are welcomed. Jesus takes us through the door he has opened.
When we need to approach God,we have no need to remember pin numbers or security questions.
We need only gratefully embrace what Jesus has done for us: recognise its necessity and its effectiveness. We need no keys or special knowledge to open the door: it is wide open already.
Blessings
