These days, if you ask someone how they’re doing, you’ll often hear, “I’m just tired.” There’s a weariness that seems to be settling deep – like a soul-level exhaustion. The kind that doesn’t go away with a good night’s sleep. There’s even a word for it, ‘weltschmerz’ a kind of world-weariness that comes when life feels far from what we’d hoped or expected.

This is an invitation to all of us – those who are worn out from striving, and those who are weighed down by things beyond their control.

In this passage, written so many years ago, Jesus speaks directly to the current situation we find ourselves in. He gives an invitation, “Come to me.” Not to a task list, not to a fix-it plan, but to Himself.

This is an invitation to all of us – those who are worn out from striving, and those who are weighed down by things beyond their control. Jesus sees both and He offers rest, not the kind of rest the world gives, but rest for our souls: a deep, true rest.

He tells us who He is, “gentle and humble in heart.” He doesn’t place demands on us; He lifts them. His way is light and kind, shaped by compassion.

Coming to Jesus can be as simple as a quiet prayer, or a whispered “help.”

But, like all invitations, this one needs a response. Will we come?

Coming to Jesus can be as simple as a quiet prayer, or a whispered “help.” It’s opening our hearts to the truth that His love is big enough for our burden.

Let’s choose to believe today that Jesus truly is rest. And in that believing, let’s begin to find it.
