A wholesome whodunnit with plenty of heart
Key points:
- A group of elderly friends draw on decades of professional experience to help solve a murder at their retirement village.
- Richard Osman balances warmth, humour and the reality of ageing and loss throughout the story.
- The reviewer calls The Thursday Murder Club a charming, witty and heartfelt read from start to finish.
We all have someone in our life with greying hair, whose walk is slowing down and whose energy isn’t what it used to be. However, one thing these older folk have on us young’uns is life experience.
Richard Osman invites his readers into the adventurous world of retirement villages, reminding us of the beautiful (and dare I say feisty) souls that live there.
The Thursday Murder Club follows a group of elderly men and women who have taken it upon themselves to try and solve the murders in their community. They draw on their many years of experience as lawyers, doctors, professional fighters and so on, in order to try and catch the killer before he strikes again.
Putting aside their differences, this ragtag group of oldies are able to combine their years of knowledge and assist the police with a murder that takes place on the grounds of their retirement village. How exciting, a crime right on their doorstep.
Mystery novels are sometimes great, and sometimes they are just too predictable, however, I found The Thursday Murder Club irresistible.
From the first page to the last I was hooked. Richard Osman has brought Elizabeth, Ron and the rest of the gang to life in a charming and humorous way, and I’m here for it.
While this book touches on the warmth and fun of friendship, there is also the reality of getting older and entering this season of life. The reality that one day, we will all have to say goodbye, in one way or another.

Osman handles the reality of grieving your loved ones beautifully. He captures the wonder of true love and navigating the highs and lows of life with, and without, your best friend.
If you enjoy a wholesome mystery that will have you laughing, tearing up and rooting for the adventurous grandmas and grandpas in your life, this book is for you.
For keeping me company on these cold winter nights and for reminding me of my own late grandparents (now I miss them all over again!), I give this book five stars.
