M.L. Stedman has put pen to paper and brought forth a novel that, if I really think about, I would describe as haunting. Not haunting as in scary and nightmare-inducing, but more along the lines of capturing the harsh reality of the human condition.

Key points:

A Far-Flung Life by M.L. Stedman explores the harsh realities of human relationships, balancing brokenness with deep love and resilience.

• Set in outback Western Australia, the novel follows a family navigating tragedy, secrets and the pressures of life on a sheep station.

• The story raises moral questions about truth, protection and choices, pointing readers back to faith and guidance in difficult decisions.

Humans disagree, humans make mistakes, humans hurt one another… sometimes beyond repair.

Yet humans are also capable of loving each greatly, of overlooking wrongs and of going beyond the call of duty to protect one another.

A Far-Flung Life follows the story of the MacBride family as they own and operate a sheep station out in the wild, arid lands of Western Australia.

One tragic event leads this family on a downward spiral of pain, secrets, trauma and heartbreak. While they are coming to terms with their new ‘normal’, the reality of life in the outback continues as they fight to maintain the integrity and productivity of the station.

I thoroughly enjoyed the “farm talk”, and I was able to truly picture scenes as I read them, with M.L. Stedman capturing landscapes, emotions and facial expressions beautifully.

This story does touch on some sensitive topics such as a car crash, suicide, trauma responses and physical violence, however they are all described tastefully and fed throughout the story seamlessly. This adds depth and lends to the reader truly feeling for the characters as their lives take twists and turns, for better and for worse.

As I went on this journey with Lorna, Matt, Pete and the other now-familiar characters, it took me back to that old tricky question; “Is it ok to tell a lie in order to protect someone?”

Sometimes the right choice isn’t obvious, but if we continue to bring all our decisions to Jesus, I believe He will guide us along the right paths (Psalm 25:4-5).
