We really only think about death in physical terms, not spiritual. But we are told that we are born spiritually dead, we were born with a broken relationship with God. We all need new life, we all need salvation. In this 5-part series, John North looks at what it means to need Jesus.
But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

Here to help you get your day focused on God as we take some time with God together.
How do you take time with God? Well, learn to be responsive to God because God has spoken to you. He does it in your own heart, giving you a sense of need for Him. He also does it very specifically in the Bible, which we call God’s word. It is God’s. Heart expressed in words to you and me.
And the great thing is that God has put His Holy Spirit into your life if you are a child of God. And the Holy Spirit takes the words of the Bible, and God uses them to speak directly into your own heart and life, and you can then respond to Him and speak to Him about what He’s saying to you and reorient your life the way it needs to be.
Time with God, so important as a major part of your life.

We’re looking this week at the question who needs Jesus, and we’re looking at the 1st 3 verses of Ephesians chapter 2 in the Bible. Let me read it to you again today:
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, and we talked yesterday about what it means to be spiritually dead and needing to receive new life spiritually from God. You were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world. According to the prince of the power of the air, that’s talking about Satan. Of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience, among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Well, these verses really describe the result of being spiritually dead. You remember we talked about, those first people that God put on the earth and how they had a wonderful relationship with Him and how when they chose to disobey and dishonour God, something changed in their basic nature. And their connection to God Himself was broken, they became spiritually dead.
Well, how that works out in our lives is that we naturally live sinful lives. It appeals to us to live sinful lives. Although the expectations of our family of the society around us may to some degree restrain us from living out our sinful desires, they’re still there, aren’t they?
We want to do what we know is wrong to do, and we find it so easy to live just for ourselves.
Selfishly focused lives, we can’t get out of that desire, the power of sin in our lives, the power of that sinful nature that draws us away from God. How can we overcome that? We need someone to rescue us, don’t we?
Well that’s what salvation is all about, that Christians talk about being rescued from that sin nature that is in us. Only Jesus can do that for you. You need Jesus.
