Alby’s family is one of more than 1200 families to call Ronald McDonald House in Westmead home this year.

Key Points

  • Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Western Sydney provides life-changing support for families like Alby’s, offering accommodation and home-cooked meals that ease emotional, physical, and financial strain during a child’s critical illness.
  • RMHC GWS aims to expand its meal services by 70 per cent in 2025 to ensure every family facing childhood illness receives at least one nourishing meal a day, helping them stay strong and focused on their child’s recovery.

This year, Eliza and Matt received the worst news any parents fear: their 20-month-old son Alby had leukaemia.

Their world became a chaotic cloud way beyond the usual chaos of a family with three children under three years old.

Eliza and Matt had to leave their home with Alby, their eldest Callie, 3, and newborn Hugh, who was just two-and-a-half weeks at the time of diagnosis, and move to Ronald McDonald House, just minutes from Westmead Children’s Hospital, to focus on Alby’s life-saving treatment.

They stayed a total of 130 nights.

Thankful for their “home away from home” while the family was battling their toughest life challenge so far, surprisingly, it was the simplest act of receiving warm meals at the end of long days that made the world of difference in their healing journey.

Parents and carers navigating the realities of childhood illness have told Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Western Sydney (RMHC GWS) that meal support is one of the most meaningful ways they’re cared for during their stay; nourishing meals can ease financial strain, lift the mental load, and create space for emotional healing.

“It’s one less thing to worry about when everything else is overwhelming,” a Ronald McDonald House Charities spokesperson said.

Alby’s mum Eliza shared, “After long days at the hospital, having a warm, home-cooked meal waiting for us meant more than we can express”.

“To the incredible supporters of Ronald McDonald House — thank you. Your generosity gives our family more than just a place to stay; it gives us comfort, dignity and togetherness during the most difficult chapter of our lives.

“When our little boy Alby was diagnosed with leukaemia, life as we knew it changed instantly. But your support meant we didn’t have to face it alone.

“We are endlessly grateful for the comfort, strength and hope your generosity brings,” Eliza said.

Sadly, Ronald McDonald House Charities Global research shows food remains a sustained unmet need for many families. So, RMHC GWS set an ambitious goal: to increase meal services by 70 per cent in 2025.

The expansion will not only serve resident families but also support those receiving care across the entire Westmead health precinct.

Their global mission is that “every family should receive at least one nutritious meal per day”.

“It’s a simple act with profound impact, helping families stay strong and present for their child’s healthcare journey.”

Nermeen Yacoub, Head of Fundraising and Partnerships at RMHC GWS, said “Preliminary findings show families come to RMHC with significant economic, health, and basic needs, and these needs persist when families leave us and return home”.

“We can address these needs through enhanced services such as extending our dinner service to more evenings and serving lunch on other days; to ease the burden of these vulnerable families while they are with us,” Ms Yacoub said. Programs such as Meals from the Heart and Weekend Cook & Care are a lifeline for families like Alby’s, but they’re only possible with the support of our community. Your support helps families like Alby’s feel nourished, cared for, and uplifted during the hardest times of their lives.
