Like in previous elections, there has been a big focus on Western Sydney during this election campaign. We’ve seen the People’s Forum at Rooty Hill RSL, heard discussion about the lack of infrastructure in Sydney’s newest suburbs and seen both leaders return to the area to win over crucial marginal seats, such as Lindsay in the Penrith area.
But did you know that Western Sydney has the highest population of Aboriginal people in the whole of Australia? Yet we don’t hear much in the debates about the issues affecting Aboriginal people. Whenever indigenous issues are covered, it’s generally from the perspective of those living in remote communities in the Northern Territory, while Aboriginal people in Sydney struggle to find a voice.
Stan Grant is a Wiradjuri man from the Riverina, who has worked for CNN as an international correspondent in many overseas locations. He’s now returned to Sydney, where he anchors Newsnight for Sky News and also works for the indigenous television station, NITV.
