Irene Gleeson in Uganda

Irene Gleeson is a teacher, a mother and a grandmother, but rather than seeing out her retirement in the way many do, she sold her Sydney beachside home and now spends most of her days living in the hot, dry, dusty town of Kitgum in Northern Uganda.

It’s now been 20 years since Irene towed her caravan into the heart of Africa and started teaching war-affected children under a tree, and her desire to “put the music back into the hearts of children who had witnessed horrific brutality” has come a long way since then.

Today her ministry cares for more than 10,000 children and encompasses schools, an AIDS hospice, and a radio station.
