As long as there’s oppression going on somewhere in the world, people will keep arriving on Australian shores, seeking a place of refuge. The issue’s back in the spotlight after Thursday’s blast off Ashmore Reef (610 km from Broome in West Australia) where three asylum seekers from Afghanistan died, while two more are missing, presumed dead.
While the cause of the explosion is still being investigated, one group paying close attention to the situation is CARAD – the “Coalition for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees”. The Perth-based organisation brings together church and community groups, to support asylum seekers and refugees.
CARAD Chairperson Rosemary Hudson-Miller joined Sheridan on Open House this week. And Open House listener Thelmie, from Adelaide, shares how she came to Australia nine years ago seeking asylum.
