Most of us would be proud to complete a single marathon, but for Hornsby father Alex, this past week has involved back-to-back runs supporting the work of anti-trafficking organisation Dignity Freedom Network.

Key points:

  • The mission behind the marathons keeps Alex motivated, aiming to raise $48,000 for Dignity Freedom Network (DFN).
  • The funds Alex raises will go toward schooling that empowers girls long-term.

“I’ve done three [marathons] so far,” Alex said.

“I did the Sydney Marathon on Sunday with 35,000 people, which was unreal.

“Then one locally around Hornsby, and another in the Leichardt Drummoyne area.

“We’ve had great weather, and it’s been amazing. I’ve really enjoyed it,” Alex said.

While the physical effort is enormous, it’s the mission behind the marathons that keeps Alex motivated. His aim is to raise $48,000 for Dignity Freedom Network (DFN) to put 500 girls through school, helping them escape cycles of abuse and poverty.

“[DFN] serve and rescue exploited young girls – whether that’s through physical abuse or mental forms of abuse,” Alex said.

“They take them out of those situations and give them accommodation and education,” Alex said.

“Once these girls graduate, they’re set up for life,” Alex said.

“Many go into the medical field, which is a growing industry. DFN really focuses on that.”

Running with a teammate on occasion, Alex’ experience has included plenty of chats, but also plenty of pain.

“The body’s a bit sore, but enjoying it,” Alex said.

“I’m still discovering [how to manage it], it’s unknown territory,” he said.

“The night before I make sure I’ve got a lot of fuel – carbohydrates especially.

“I get up at 5am, eat, then run at 7. During the run it’s Powerade, water, and energy gels.

“Just trying to keep the body going,” Alex said.
