Moana, daughter of an island chief, sets out to save her Pacific home from an evil blight that is consuming paradise. To do so, she has to find the legendary demigod Maui and replace the long-lost stone of life.

RATED: Moana is rated PG for scenes that might scare some children

AUDIENCE: Moana is an excellent choice for girls who like to sing along with films. If they liked Frozen, they’d love this.

WHAT’S GOOD: The music in this film is exceptional and likely to create a lot of toe-tapping.

WHAT’S NOT: The film Moana is based on a collection of Pacific Island creation myths, and the pantheon of gods that support the story. However, this is more a backdrop for the story and not really any more threatening than the Greek gods who turn up in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING: There is an excellent stepping stone for parents to pick up on in the plot: Moana is a significant person, not because of what she does or her determination to believe in herself, but because she is chosen. Our worth resides in who has chosen us not what we’ve decided to be.
