How a Window Full of Flowers Sparked a School-Wide Hit: Miles and Phoebe on Hope Breakfast

For the Phillips family, music and creativity are at the core of all they do.

Along with dad Joel, Miles and Phoebe joined Hope Breakfast duo Brendan and Danniebelle this week to offer a glimpse into their household, where spontaneous song creation is an everyday occurrence.

With catchy hits like Flowers and Eastern Rosellas, the talented siblings have been able to transform their observations of the world into catchy tunes that show creativity often blossoms from the simplest inspirations.

Phoebe’s journey to writing Flowers started with a simple glance out of a window, where she saw blossoms swaying in sunlight.

“I was looking out the window and it was a very bright sunny day and I saw a lot of flowers. So I wrote a song about it,” she said.

Phoebe’s song was so successful it became a school-wide anthem and played over the bells.

“It was nice,” she said.

Miles followed with his own track that has gained him a spot on Triple J Unearthed, inspired by observing vibrant birds at his grandparents’ holiday home.

“It stood out,” Miles said about the Eastern Rosella.

When discussing their songwriting process, Miles humorously noted, “we just workshopped it with dad,” echoing the collaborative nature of creativity in their family.

“It enriches life so much more,” Joel said, emphasising the satisfaction derived from creation.

Joel talked about the value of fostering creativity and inquisitiveness in his children.

“One of the things that we love to encourage, and these guys do so well, is instead of consuming, it’s really good to create something,” he said.

Since their appearance on Hope Breakfast, the family has released the full band version of Eastern Rosellas, Aussie icon Ben Lee has performed a cover of the song, and Joel and Myles have had special guest appearances across several Sydney morning shows.
