Listen: Australian Army officer Lieutenant Manning Field retells his great-grandfather's inspirational story
At the City of Ryde Anzac Service over the weekend, a touching story was told about Sergeant Charlie Smith, who served in the army in the First World War.
His story stood out because it embodied that courageous “Anzac Spirit” of looking after your mates and putting their safety above your own.
The story was eloquently told by a young Australian Army officer, 23-year-old Lieutenant Manning Field, who also happens to be Charlie Field’s great-grandson.
Lt Field came into the Hope Studios to share the story of his great-grandfather’s contribution to World War I and why it embodied the Anzac Spirit. Listen in the player above.
