Read Psalm 118:24

24          This is the day the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it. (NLT)

We so often live in the past, haunted by its failures or perhaps nostalgically encouraged by its pleasures and memories. Or we may choose to be focussed on the future, either anxious about its threats or excited by its possibilities. All this might be unavoidable, but we dare not let the past or future blind or deafen us to the present day.

Frederick Buechner puts it this way: “Today is the point to which all your yesterdays have been leading since the hour of your birth. It is the point from which all your tomorrows will proceed until the hour of your death. If you were aware of how precious it is, you could hardly live through it. Unless you are aware of how precious it is, you can hardly be said to be living at all…..All the other days have either disappeared into darkness or oblivion or not yet emerged from them. Today is the only day there is.”

We may not always feel like rejoicing as we consider this day. There may be much that is sad or threatening in it. But we rejoice in this day not because all that it contains is necessarily good, but because God is the creator and sustainer of this day. He gives himself to us this very day. Yesterday has gone and tomorrow does not as yet exist. So it is this day in which we encounter God. And so it is this day that we rejoice.
