Read Job 26:12-14

12        By his power the sea grew calm.
By his skill he crushed the great sea monster.
13        His Spirit made the heavens beautiful,
and his power pierced the gliding serpent.
14        These are just the beginning of all that he does,
merely a whisper of his power.
Who,then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?” (NLT)

True wisdom is knowing what we don’t know. As Job wrestled with his terrible life situation,he recognised that the end point of his wrestling was not to gain complete knowledge of the ways of God. It was rather to be an acknowledgement of his presence and power.

We may be tempted sometimes to seek for certainty in all the details of our faith journey. But this in itself is a denial of faith. Faith is not the same as knowledge. Faith recognises the limits of knowledge even while it recognises the value of the limited knowledge we have.

Faith is an awareness that we are being held in the powerful grace of God even as we often struggle to discern his power and his grace. Perhaps this is behind Jesus’ statement that we must become like little children. Such little ones don’t know a whole lot about a whole lot of things, but they can still live cheerfully and confidently.

Healthy Christian living ultimately doesn’t depend on how much we know. It depends on trusting that we are ourselves deeply known. Faith is not ultimately about how many facts I hold in my mind but about trusting that I myself am being held by one who is both good and beyond my complete understanding.
