Time with God with John North podcast hero banner

We need to realise that we are not in control of how our lives will ultimately pan out. We need to invest in getting to know the God who is.

Key reflections:

  • Your time and future are ultimately in God’s hands, so you should stop relying on your own control and instead trust His direction for your life.
  • Intentionally give part of your day to God through prayer, reading the Bible and listening to His guidance so your life can be shaped by His purposes.

Good morning.

It’s great to start the day the best way possible, isn’t it, and that’s by taking some time with God, reading something out of the Bible and saying, God – I want you to guide my life, I want you to shape it, and I want you to shape my perspective on life, so it matches your perspective, because I know you’re the only one in this universe who sees things from the proper perspective.

So let’s do that. This week, we’re spending this week talking about giving God our time. And wouldn’t you say it’s true that your time is one of your most treasured things in your life.

It seems like there’s so many things taking up our time, and any time we have control over is so precious to us. What are we going to do with it? And then on the bigger picture, if you’re a young person and you’re sort of charting the course of your life, what are you going to study? What kind of job do you want to get? Where do you want that to lead to? You’re thinking about what you’re going to put your time into.

Well, I want you today to recognise that our time is in God’s hands. He is in control, not we ourselves. Let me read you again the passage we’re looking at this week, starting in James chapter 4, verse 13 in the Bible.

Here’s what God says to us.

Come now, you who say today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit. Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, if the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.

As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it. For him it is sin.

While this passage definitely shows us the truth that our time is in God’s hands, doesn’t it?

You do not know what tomorrow will bring.

You don’t know how many people a couple of years ago sat in their lives without concern, thinking their lives were in total control and all was good and nothing could shake that. And then the coronavirus appeared.

And we all realised how little of our lives is in our control and how much we depend on God in life. Anything else, The Bible says in this passage, anything else is arrogance.

Thinking I am the master of my fate, I will chart my own course. Nothing can take control away from me. Well, if you hold that view sooner or later, a crisis is going to come, and you’re going to realise I am not in control.

And at that point you need to recognise God is the one in control, and my desire for you is that before that time comes, before God has to send a crisis into your life to shake you up a bit and help you realise how much you need Him.

I hope you will recognise that on your own.

That your time is in God’s hands, God is in control, and not you. When you realise that, then the significance of focusing time in your life on your relationship with God becomes much more important, right?

So that when you get up, you want to open your Bible and let God speak into your life. You want to get God’s perspective on life. You want to have a good relationship with God, dealing with those things in your life that you know offend Him, so that you know God is working with you in the time in your life to establish his plans for your life, which are always good.

So as you go into this day to day. Just think about your time today.

What part of your time, even if you start with a small amount, can you start giving to God, focusing on Him, listening to Him as you read the Bible, responding, talking to Him, interacting with what He’s saying to you, and building your life around His purposes for your life.
