Praying For an End to Covid: Christians Invited to Join National Prayer Day on Sunday, August 2

A National Day of Worship, Prayer and Fasting is being held on Sunday, August 2, with prayer sessions to be broadcast online over Zoom between 3pm and 9pm AEST.

The initiative is being led by the National Council of Churches of Australia, headed by Anglican Bishop Philip Huggins, in co-operation with the ‘National Day of Prayer’ and Canberra Declaration movement, led by Warwick Marsh.

Also backing the event are Fred and Silvana Nile of the Christian Democratic Party, along with various intercessory prayer networks around the nation such as Partners in Prayer, Arrow House of Prayer, Jesuran Healing Centre, Prayer on Eagles Wings, and many more.

Topics for prayer on Sunday will include:

• That Australia will turn to God as a nation in a spirit of repentance.
• For an end to the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia and particularly Victoria.
• For the nations most affected by COVID-19 including America, Brazil, India and others, as the count of cases recorded worldwide reaches 17 million.
• Prayer for national and international leaders in responding to the crisis.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, various Christian leaders will lead group prayers, live worship, Bible reading and interactive prayer.

Anyone is invited to log into the Zoom prayer gathering at any time throughout the six hours, whether “for a short time or a long time”.

The ‘Call to Prayer’ Headed by Australian Christian Churches and ACCTV

A separate but similar network also uniting believers nationwide in prayer, is the national Call to Prayer movement.

Established in March when the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact Australia, the Call to Prayer campaign was an effort of the Christian television channel ACCTV, Christian Media and Arts Australia, Christian radio stations across the nation, and headed by Pastor Wayne Alcorn, national president of the Australian Christian Churches.

Speaking to Hope Media in March, Wayne said that all of the heads of Australia’s major church denominations were unanimously in support of the Call to Prayer. The initiative began by calling Australians to pray together at 7pm each evening, for the nation, and for an end to the pandemic. This continued for 100 days, ending on June 30. However prayer doesn’t stop there; with the organisation’s latest post encouraging people to keep seeking God for his intervention.

“We have not finished praying,” says the CTP website; “The Lord’s people are to be a people of prayer, filled with the Spirit, rejoicing in the Lord.  The well-known words of 2 Chronicles 7:14 are as important and relevant as ever:  ‘if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.’

The organization is continuing its work of encouraging believers throughout the COVID-19 crisis, with weekly emails to inspire prayer and devotion.
