13 You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvellous—how well I know it. (NLT)
God doesn’t make ‘job lots’. He didn’t make humans in bulk. He creates us as unique individuals who he equips to live in unique ways. His common desire is that all human beings love him and one another. But precisely how they do this will vary. We are not robots programmed to do his will. We are free agents—who also happen to misuse that freedom.
It is sad that we may bury our uniqueness. Others may demand we conform to their requirements and expectations. How many human beings have creative spirits which have been scorned by those who ought to have been encouraging them? How many songs remain unsung, how many poems remain unwritten? How many human beings labour as square pegs in round holes, trying to be what others want them to be rather than being who God made them to be?
As little children we didn’t worry too much about proudly presenting our childish creations to our parents and see them prominently displayed on the fridge door. But with many people, that sort of freedom dissipates over time. We become self-conscious, we experience one or two too many rebuffs. We lose confidence, we become the creature of the myriad expectations of others and our own distorted inner selves.
A creative God can be expected to make creative people. As our passage says, we are wonderfully complex. Not at all boringly routine.
Blessings
