The comedian Milton Berle once described a committee as a group that takes minutes and spends hours. Perhaps a bit unkind, but it can be true that meetings and committees can be a substitute for action rather than a preparation for action. How often do we hear of people whom we want to contact as ‘being in a meeting’? Some people’s workplace seems to consist of one meeting after the other, so that we might wonder what work actually gets done.
When God wanted a job done, he didn’t convene an angelic subcommittee or have endless meetings within the Trinity. He acted. He invited Jesus to do the job of offering reconciliation to humankind. Lots of talk and deliberation wouldn’t achieve it. The problem of sin and guilt and estrangement couldn’t be resolved in a meeting.
To paraphrase another familiar text, God so loved the world that he didn’t form a committee or convene a meeting. He came in person to do the job himself.
