Read John 18:37

37 Pilate said, “So you are a king?”

Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” (NLT)

Those who determine to follow Jesus may have various motivations. They may be utterly desperate and cling to him as a sort of last resort. They may see him as a guarantor of some sort of personal success. He may be viewed as the best path to happiness though, on that score, C. S. Lewis once remarked that if he wanted happiness, a bottle of good Port would do the job much more readily!

In our passage today, Jesus reveals the overriding reason for turning to him. He is the source of truth about God. What he says, what he did, can be trusted. To dismiss him or reject him is to turn away from the truth and ultimately be deceived.

For some of us at least, following Jesus is not so much about getting more out of life now (though that has some validity) but rather about embracing a faith and a worldview that makes most sense of reality.

The faith, which is centred on Jesus, explains what is right and good about life and also what is wrong and bad about life. It tells me how what is wrong can be put right. The Christian faith might not make me rich or happy or successful. But it does make sense.
