Psalm 145:6-7

Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim your greatness. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness.(NLT)

Some people seem to spend most of their lives in front of a complaints window with a sour and offended look on their faces. They are the types who believe that every silver lining has a cloud. That if all is going right, something must be wrong.

And let’s face it, there is much to get us down, much that we can legitimately protest about. This Psalmist is not telling us to just put on a happy face and pretend all is well when it is not. There is too much lament in the Psalms to accuse the Psalmist of such head in the clouds false optimism.

But yet we must praise God. Not because life is always good but because he is always good. Not because circumstances have turned out for the best for us but because he will work good out of all circumstances. Praise is not pretence. It is facing reality wearing the right set of spectacles.

Put on the spectacles of complaint, and we find plenty to complain about. Put on the spectacles of gratitude and we find plenty to be thankful for. Wearing such spectacles, we see life differently. The problems are still there but are in perspective. We not only see the problems but the God who is above and beyond those problems. Bringing God into the picture changes the whole picture.

Blessings
