What sorrow awaits you who build cities with money gained through murder and corruption! Has not the Lord of Heaven’s Armies promised that the wealth of nations will turn to ashes? They work so hard, but all in vain! For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of the Lord. (NLT)
For much of the time, it seems to us that in the game of life the bad guys are winning. Evil dictators are overthrown by those who in turn become evil dictators. Those they rule are neglected while the rulers enrich themselves. Those who make deals with political powers seem to get all the breaks while the common people struggle.
All marks of a world that has severed its connection with its creator. With no moral anchorage, there is no incentive to do good. Self interest occupies the throne. And it does so not just in the great or not so great world powers. It insidiously infects school and community groups, families, churches. We may have certain ends in mind and don’t care too much about what means we use to achieve them.
We can do what we can to offer a better way of life, we can set a better example. But complete victory over such moral corruption will have to wait till Jesus comes to put his rule into practice. His will is not done on earth as it is in heaven. But one day all that will change.
Because Jesus is who he claimed to be, because he did rise from the dead, we can be sure of a future “shalom”, the new heavens and the new earth. The good guys will win.
Blessings
