If you joined me yesterday morning, I asked the question, are you still looking? What is it that you’re looking for, and mentioned the statement from Augustine, who became a bishop of Hippo in AD 397, long time ago, and he wrote this in his book called ‘Confessions’. “God has made us for Himself, and our hearts are restless until we rest in Him.” Now this is a very old statement, but it’s a wonderful statement.

CS Lewis, as I said yesterday, said, don’t let your happiness depend on something that you might lose.

So are you still looking? I think what we really need is something or someone that makes us feel adequate for each day. For example, when you got up this morning, did you feel that you were prepared for the day? Did you feel adequate for whatever it is that you have to do? Because I think all of us want a full life.

But I want to say that that full life, the fullness of life can only come from Jesus Christ.

Someone has said the poorest person in the world is not the one without a single coin in his hand, but the one without God in his heart.

A young man in his twenties wrote this, I feel like I’m a failure because I’m trying to become something, and yet I don’t even know what it is. All I know is how to get by. Someday if I discover my purpose, I’ll feel like I’m beginning to live. So that young man in his twenties was able to articulate something that many of us really feel, even though we perhaps can’t describe it like that. I need to become someone.

The Bible’s very helpful in Ephesians 5:17 in the message translation.

Paul, the apostle had these words which are really very helpful words.

Don’t live carelessly or unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the master wants.

Yes, so with Jesus you won’t be left to stumble on alone. You will certainly have a definite purpose. Pope Benedict the 16th said that man’s great true hope, which holds firm in spite of all disappointments, can only be God. God who has loved us and continues to love us to the end until it is all accomplished. So, you see, people from different religions, different backgrounds are all saying the same thing.

If you want hope, if you’re still looking, what is it actually that you’re looking for? Chris Tomlin in his song Enough says all of you, and this was a prayer to God, all of you is more than enough for all of me, for every thirst and every need. You satisfy me with your love, and all I have in you is more than enough. That’s a prayer.

I mean the story is told of a man who lost his key to his car at night and was searching for it under a street lamp, and a friend came along and asked what he was looking for. And when he found the man had lost his key, he also got down on his knees, and they were both there searching, and they searched, they looked everywhere, and finally the friend who stopped to help said, you know, look, we’ve searched everywhere, we haven’t found that key.

Are you sure? This is where you lost it?

And the man said, oh no, I lost the key down the block, it’s just that the light is much better here.

You see, that’s what happens. To believe in Christ is to believe that not only is he the light, but he’s shining in the right place. And that means that he’s shining in our hearts, in our lives to help us find what we’re looking for. But Bono in the band U2 said in that very popular song – I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.

Belief and confusion are not mutually exclusive. I believe, he said that belief gives you a direction in the confusion.

But if you don’t see the full picture, that’s the point, he said, that’s what faith is.

Yes, Christ is our light and our direction, and he won’t fail you. So do you sometimes feel like you haven’t found what you’re looking for spiritually, and I have to say, first of all, you’re in good company. Many, many people do that. But don’t let it stop you from pressing on and searching in the light of Jesus Christ. Don’t let anything keep you from moving ahead.

Now it may not be easy, but we can with each day get a step closer to really what we’re looking for.

Let’s Pray

Dear Lord, thank you that these truths are so heartwarming and so good for us. We know we can look and find you, and we thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
