Philippians 4:12-13

I know now how to live when things are difficult and I know how to live when things are prosperous. In general and in particular I have learned the secret of facing either poverty or plenty. I am ready for anything through the strength of the one who lives within me. (JBP)

None of us knows what any day will bring. Followers of Jesus can adopt two approaches to this. One is that they can seek to ensure the day turns out as they believe it should. Earnest prayer and fervent faith and bold decision making are the means by which we control the day and the surrounding circumstances.

Problem with this is that we can’t ultimately control anything. Seeking to do so leads to frustration and anxiety. Life simply does not and cannot conform to our demands. We cannot take life by the scruff of the neck and twist it into the shape we desire.

The other and better way of approaching each day is to surrender it to Jesus. Like Paul, we may have a lot or have a little, we may be happy or we may be unhappy. But whatever our circumstances, we trust that our God will give us the strength to face whatever we have to face.

We may feel weak and helpless but we are promised divine power and strength. We have no need to march into each day feeling like supermen or superwomen. We are neither. We simply need to give each day to God, each life situation to God, trusting he will give us what we need to live in that situation. God doesn’t ultimately promise to change our circumstances, but he does promise to change us so we can meet those circumstances head on.

Blessings
