And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless!(NLT)
Most of us have lived long enough to know life is not always fair. As the writer of this text acknowledges, the good sometimes suffer whereas the not so good get off lightly. We can’t dismiss this as miserable pessimism and insist that if only we looked on the bright side of life we would see a different story.
Unfairness is part and parcel of living in an out of shape world. We ought not to expect life to be utterly fair. True, we ought not go to the other extreme and assume that there is no fairness, that goodness has no reward or wickedness no consequences. While our world is not as good as it could be, it is not as bad as it could be either.
What we have to realise is that while life is often unfair, God is not unfair. To conclude that because life is unfair God is unfair is to confuse life and God. God, for a time at least, puts up with unfairness. He knows that to wipe it out would mean wiping out human creation because we are all prone to such unfairness.
One day, though, he will put things right. Then life will be so saturated and shot through with God himself that God’s own fairness will permeate life itself. Till then, we cling to a fair and loving God in times which seem anything but fair and loving.
